The Dominican Winter Professional Baseball Championship ends on 17 December 2018. That means this weekend, the Toros del Este, Aguilas Cibaeñas and Gigantes del Cibao will vie for the last slot available. The Estrellas Orientales took the lead of the tournament on Wednesday, 12 December 2018. The two Santo Domingo city teams, the Leones del Escogido and the Tigres del Licey, are tied in second place, just a game behind.
There is speculation the 2018-2019 season could be one that stays on the south side of the island, with teams not having to travel to the northern Santiago and San Francisco de Macoris ball parks given that the two northern teams – Aguilas Cibaeñas and Gigantes del Cibao – would practically need to win all their games to grab the fourth spot from the Toros del Este of La Romana.
