
PTop executives of Marriott International were here to announce the intention of The Luxury Collection, W Hotels and Ritz-Carlton Reserve brands to open three new hotels catering to the luxury traveler in Puerto Plata, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Construction is scheduled to start in 2019. The details of the new lodging nor the location of the hotels were not revealed in the Presidency announcement.
The Marriott investors met with President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, 11 December 2018. They say the project calls for an investment of more than US$350 million and will create more than 2,000 direct jobs. The investors were accompanied by Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier García in their visit to the Presidential Palace.
The Presidency that Marriott International and The Ocean Club Group would be uniting to offer a new standard of luxury tourism in the Dominican Republic. Also participating in the presentation of the new luxury properties to the President was The Ocean Club Group president, Ian Schembri Sant. The company presently operates Gansevoort Playa Imbert in Sosua.
Hervé Humler, president and president and chief operations officer for Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, expressed his enthusiasm in the press conference called to make the announcement. “I want to express our appreciation to the President and his cabinet for the support to our initiatives. He said the intention is to install “the best of the best.” He was referring to The Ritz-Carlton, W Hotels and The Luxury Collection.
Also participating in the meeting was Bojan Kumer, Marriott International vice president for international hotel development for the Caribbean and Latin America. He said their plan is to completely transform the north coast into a luxury destination.
Also present for the meeting was Environment Minister Angel Estevez; legal advisor to the President Flavio Dario Espinal; Remy Teuma, head of the New York office of Messier Maris & Associés, a financial advisory firm that specializes in mergers & acquisitions, restructuring and debt advisory services for corporate players, family-owned businesses and private-equity groups. Also attending were Juan Francisco Cordero, director for The Ocean Club Group and Carlos Aguilar, architect for GVA in Mexico.
