Sweeping changes at the DNCD

The new president of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), Vice Admiral Félix Alburquerque Comprés has ordered changes across the agency including in central departments, regional offices, as well as the ports and airports around the country. In addition, he has ordered that all of the Army, Armada and Air Force agents who were working for the DNCD in different areas to leave the agency and return to their respective institutions to be replaced by new personnel.

The DNCD heads of the international airports at Las Americas (Santo Domingo), Punta Cana, Santiago, and Puerto Plata have all been removed as well as the regional heads in San Francisco de Macoris, La Romana, Santiago and Puerto Plata cities. Other changes are of personnel in the areas of administration, investigation, intelligence and operations. The whole DNCD department in Bani has been transferred.

According to the new president, the changes are routine, to ensure the improvement in response faced with the current level of criminal activity.

The changes come after a respected Police colonel was murdered in a drug surveillance operation on 8 January 2019 in Baní.
