The City Council of the National District unanimously approved a resolution that would add the name of late President Joaquín Balaguer to the Parque Mirador del Sur in Santo Domingo. Balaguer built the park and was known to visit for long walks attired in suit and tie. The request had been made by the block of PRSC councilors. Balaguer was President for terms from 1966 to 1978 and from 1986 to 1996.
Balaguer is also responsible for the construction of Greater Santo Domingo National Botanical Gardens, the National Zoo, and the Mirador del Norte Park in northern Santo Domingo.
