Sur Futuro announces co-management of Los Baos river basin

Sur Futuro non-profit announced it will be working with the management of the Los Baos riverbasin. Melba Segura, president of Sur Futuro, made the announcement in a presentation together with Agriculture Minister Osmar Benitez, representatives of the Spanish Cooperation Agency (AECID) in the Dominican Republic, Antonio Benete of CESAL; Marina Pimentel of Humanismo y Democracia (H+D), and Jose Homero Isa of the Instituto Dermatológico y Cirugía de la Piel Huberto Bogaert (IDCP), among others.

A Master Plan for the Sustainable and Comprehensive Management of the Water Resources of the Microbasin of the Los Baos River was presented. The project seeks to make a significant contribution to improving the quality of life of the population of San Juan de la Maguana.

The river basin is located in the southwest and includes 52 communities with 16,252 inhabitants. The majority of the population live in the communities of Vallejuelo, Jorgillo, Batista, El Rosario and Derrumbadero.
