
On Sunday, 3 February 2019, President Danilo Medina visited the Punta Catalina coal-fired generation plant in Peravia province. Subsequently, the Presidency announced the start up of operations within the next two weeks. The first output will be 50 megawatts and this would rise to 200 megawatts by 24 February. The power thermoelectric central has two power plants with capacity for 376 MW each.
The Medina administration is preparing to sell the power plant built by a consortium that included Odebrecht to international investors.
