The president of the Dominican Association of Restaurants (Aderes) Rafael Cabrera says that the increase in cruise ship arrivals has meant a difference for the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, and especially for the restaurant businesses. He estimated that on cruise ship days, there are 2,000 to 3,000 persons patronizing the area businesses, mainly the eateries. “The average tourist spends US$20 to US$40 per person,” he estimated.
Cabrera highlighted that the big plus of the Colonial City is that the tourists can walk back in time history some 500 years in terms of architecture and historical city. He said the tourists enjoy the stops at eateries, many under the stewardship of world class chefs.
“The Dominican gastronomic offerings are very diverse and when you compare it to that those of other countries, you can see that our cuisine is very popular and that in the Dominican Republic it is possible to eat very well,” said Cabrera.
He says the greatest challenge for the Dominican Association of Restaurants and the business of the Colonial City in general is to continue developing the area as a prime tourist attraction of the city of Santo Domingo.
