
The Dominican Republic now has 11 in vitro fertilization centers, eight in Santo Domingo and three in Santiago, and every year around 1,000 treatments are carried out to assist in reproduction for those who experience difficulty becoming pregnant. The first successful treatment that resulted in the birth of a child was in 1996. Dr. Alexis Martínez of the Santo Domingo Fertility Center estimates that each procedure costs between RD$400,000 to RD$500,000.
