
Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas was in Germany for meetings to strengthen Dominican relations and discuss global agenda issues. During his visit, Vargas proposed an alliance for development and competitiveness between the Dominican Republic and Germany and to develop common ground for both countries to pursue a global agenda on strategic issues. Vargas made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the 16th Latin American Conference on German Economy in Berlin, Germany where he spoke on behalf of Latin America. Also speaking at the opening ceremony was German Economy Minsiter Peter Altmater.
Dominican-German trade is now at US$475 million. He highlighted that European Union direct investment in the country was US$350 million for the thirst three quarters of 2018. He encouraged an increase in trade and investment between both countries. “We are currently working to become a logistics center with regional distribution facilities for foreign and Dominican companies,” highlighted Vargas. This would take advantage of the country’s geographical position.
The Ministry of Foreign Relations reported that Vargas met with German businessmen in the sectors of aviation, banking, energy, and agriculture during his visit to Germany.
