Punta Catalina not in operation as of 25 February

The government-owned Punta Catalina thermo-electrical plant under construction by the Odebrecht-Technimont consortium was not started up on Saturday, 23 February 2019 despite an announcement to the contrary made by Hacienda Minister Donald Guerrero. To date there has been no explanation as to why the second date for the starting of the plant has been missed.

Nevertheless, the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) maintains that the plant is in the testing stage prior to being brought online fulltime. As reported by the CDEEE, tests are being carried out under the supervision of several international specialists.

The Punta Catalina coal-fired 752MW generation plant is the largest contracted work by Odebrecht in the Dominican Republic.

There is expectation the plant could actually get started in time President Danilo Medina to make the announcement as part of his 27 February speech where he sums up the achievements of his cabinet.
