
WCG Energy Ltd announced the start of construction of a US$78 million solar energy plant in Mata de Palma, Guerra in Monte Plata province on Monday, 25 February 2019. The project is 45 minutes from the city of Santo Domingo. The plan is for it to generate 110 million kilowatt hours, an amount sufficient to supply the present energy demand of more than 80,000 inhabitants in the eastern region.
Serge Gharibian, president of the company, came for the symbolic start of construction. Also attending was Angel Canó, president of the National Energy Commission, and Ruben Jimenez Bichara, executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) and senator Charlie Mariotti (PLD-Monte Plata), among others. Gharibian remarked that the project will be a model to follow for the production of renewable energy.
The company had been authorized to carry out preliminary studies for the power generation company in 2012.
