
First Lady Cándida Montilla de Medina is in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates since Monday, 11 March 2019 to attend the Special Summer Olympic Games that are being held there through 21 March. She is accompanied by Martha Rodríguez and Miguel Reyes, technical coordinator and advisor on international affairs respectively from her Office.
The First Lady is the guest of honor for the official ceremonies at the games, including the opening ceremony. Some 7,500 athletes from 170 countries are taking part in the games.
The Dominican Republic is represented by 21 athletes in the disciplines of athletics, bowling, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, triathlon and beach volleyball.
In addition, First Lady Montilla will have a full agenda of meetings to strengthen relationships between her office and institutions in the UAE in the area of social inclusion and will be signing agreements with thee Dubai with the Autism Center and the University of Dubai.
First reports from Abu Dhabi is that Alejandro Batlle became the first Dominican to medal in the competitions. He won a bronze in triathlon.
