Deputy Lucia Medina (San Juan de la Maguana-PLD) harangued government workers to defend their jobs and back the planned reelection of her brother, President Danilo Medina.
In the audio with her statements that went viral on social media, she urged fellow government workers to get to work for the reelection. She said that if reelection is not a go, the party risks there being a second electoral round (when no presidential candidate reaches the minimum 50% + 1 vote) and electoral defeat.
“We will do all possible so that the government of President Danilo Medina continues,” said the legislator who urged government workers to go out and defend their jobs.
She urged government workers to campaign in favor of reelection, despite the latter being banned in the 2015 Constitution that was passed in order to allow President Danilo Medina to run for reelection in 2016.
President Danilo Medina has said he will announce his decision to seek reelection in this month of March 2019.
El Dia quotes political analyst Belarminio Ramírez who says that polls show that Danilo Medina is the only PLD political with the sufficient popularity to win the 2020 election in a first round.
Lucia Medina herself seeks to be the PLD candidate to senator for the province of San Juan de la Maguana. The post is held by Senator Felix Bautista, who served as director of the Supervisory Office of Public Works of the Presidency and whom Transparency International has described as one of the top five most corrupt men in the world. Medina says that Bautista won the position thanks to her popularity. She says she has already held the position of president of the Chamber of Deputies and now seeks to advance to the Senate.
