Wheat imports on the rise

According to a 5 April Global Agricultural Information Network report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Dominican Republic, which has one of the highest per capita wheat and wheat products consumption rates in Latin America, is forecast to consume 422,000 tonnes of wheat in 2019-20, up from 415,000 the previous year. Dominican imports of US wheat imports are expected to increase to 535,000 tonnes in 2019. Demand is spurred by growing demand in the hotel, restaurant and industrial sectors. A considerable amount of wheat flour and finished products are then exported to neighboring Haiti.
