A vehicle caught on fire on Tuesday, 14 May 2019 in the afternoon causing the shutdown of the important tunnel that connects east and west Santo Domingo. Personal injuries were not reported. Other vehicles inside the tunnel at the time suffered smoke damages only. The owners of these vehicles abandoned these in the tunnel and rain for safety.
The fire did cause a major bottleneck on the Las Americas Expressway. The firemen arrived and put out the fire, but the tunnel remained closed for hours due to the extensive smoke.
