Puerto Plata is leading cruise ship port in the Dominican Republic

Deputy Tourism Minister Julio Almonte reports that in the first five months of the year, 86 cruise ships have arrived to Amber Cove, the Carnival Cruise port in Maimón. From January to May, 365,257 have arrived on the cruise ships. Of these 273,399 were cruise passengers and another 91,858 crew.

Puerto Plata is the country’s leading cruise ship destination since the opening of Amber Cove in 2015. To date, 543 cruise ship stops, bringing 2,275,727 cruise passengers and crew have arrived at that port.

Puerto Plata is working to lure more maritime tourists when a second cruise ship terminal, Taino Bay, opens in 2020 attracting different cruise lines. The new port is under construction in the city of Puerto Plata.

Cruise ships also stop at Casa de Campo La Romana and Catalina Island in La Romana, Sansouci Santo Domingo, Cayo Levantado in Samaná, and Cap Cana in Punta Cana.
