The Dominican Armada has announced that in coordination with the 911 Emergency System they have rescued 19 people some 12 nautical miles off the coast of Punta de los Nidos, in Altagracia Province, when a boat going to Puerto Rico started to sink, due to large waves.
The group of illegal travelers was made up of 14 men and four women, including one who was pregnant. They were all rescued by the Dominican Armada and 911 personnel provided medical assistance.
However, one pregnant woman, 43-year-old Maria Yesenia Vasquez died later in the afternoon from acute bronchitis while being treated in a hospital in Higuey.
