The National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States donated a Seaglider to the Dominican Navy. The equipment is used to follow the path of hurricanes.
The equipment was delivered on Thursday, 15 August 2019, to the Navy head office in Santo Domingo (Base Naval 27 de Febrero) located at Av. España in eastern Santo Domingo.
The Seaglider will be used to track hurricanes in the Caribbean Sea. The underwater device moves through the ocean and communicates with satellites to transmit data and determine its global position. It uses changes in buoyancy for thrust and a stable hydrodynamic shape to achieve flight in the water. External sensors are constantly scanning the ocean to determine water properties.
Present at the ceremony were US Ambassador Robin Bernstein, Pascual Prota, national director of the National Authority for Maritime Affairs (Anamar), Navy Captain Benny H. Batista Castillo, representing the General Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Emilio Recio Segura, and oceanographer Gustavo Jorge Gori from NOAA.
