More Dominicans to be deported from the USA

More than 30,000 Dominicans qualify for “accelerated deportation” which has been introduced by the United States as of 1 September 2019, whereby those foreigners who have broken the law will be deported.

If a person has been living in the country illegally, be they students or tourists, the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) can deport them, without these having to appear in court as in the past.

Immigration expert Roque Leonel Rodríguez said that the main interest of ICE is to deport those with criminal records, and those who are in the country illegally.

The new measure establishes that ICE can detain any person in the street, ask for documents. If ICE can prove the person is illegally in the country, arrest and deportation are now in order.

According to Rodriguez, there are more than 10,000 Dominicans in United States’ jails, with between 3,000 and 5,000 deported each year.
