On 20 August 2013, a green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nicknamed “Jaira” was tagged when laying eggs in Guibia Beach in Santo Domingo. At the time she was 113cm long and weighed around 300 kg. The turtle is 30 to 40 years old.
Now, fisherman Ramón Antonio Lopez (Pinpín) photographed Jaira on 13 September 2019 again at Guibia Beach, as reported in Diario Libre.
Marine biologist Omar Shamir Reynoso is proud that the turtle-monitoring program is working. Malecón fishermen have been trained to be on the lookout for turtles.
