High blood pressure is major killer in DR

High blood pressure is the leading cardiovascular risk factor and represents the primary cause of death in this country. Among patients of the Dominican Institute Heart Association, 50% of their fatalities are due to this issue.

Dr. Ernesto Diaz Alvarez on occasion of the International Heart Day urged prevention as the significant way to reduce fatalities. Under the slogan “My heart, your heart,” the doctor noted that high blood pressure, combined with obesity, alcohol abuse, a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, poor eating habits, high cholesterol, smoking, depression and stress contribute to the problem. Controlling sugar and fats and avoiding stress are steps to prevent high blood pressure, he said.

Dr. Diaz Alvarez urged moderation in all of the areas of a person’s activities. He noted that over 17,000,000 persons die each year, worldwide from heart issues, and in this country, 38% of all deaths, and a third of all the deaths from chronic, non-transmissible illnesses.
