
Police director Major General Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte has announced that from tomorrow, Thursday 3 October 2019, all permissions for absence for the police are canceled. The announcement is made days before the primary elections are due to take place on Sunday 6 October. He said that all police officers will be serving as the Military Electoral Police, who are responsible for security during the event.
Bautista spoke following a meeting to discuss the policing of the primaries, together with the 66 heads of departments and the 14 regional directors.
The ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the largest opposition party, the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) are scheduled to hold the primaries to choose their presidential, congressional and municipal candidates on the day. In the case of the PLD, the primary is open to any of the seven million eligible voters. The PRM vote is limited to 1.3 million registered members of the party.
