Vice President Margarita Cedeño announced her support for her husband Leonel Fernandez in the 6 October 2019 Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) primary. She asked Dominicans to vote for Fernández, even when they do not belong to that organization. The former First Lady said the primaries will be a demonstration of democracy. Her husband, three-term former President Leonel Fernández faces Gonzalo Castillo, of the Danilista sector, in the PLD race. Castillo has the support of President Medina and most of his cabinet.
Cedeño has been Vice President for the two terms of President Danilo Medina. She also aspired to be the PLD party presidential candidate. Leading polls had early on positioned her as the third most popular politician, after President Danilo Medina and her husband.
“On 6 October, I will vote for him, for my husband, for the president of my party, and together with him I will continue to work so that all Dominican people have more opportunities, so that men and women alike can live with dignity and well-being, and so that young people can undertake and develop their innovative capacities, so that they can build a better future for their families,” Cedeño said in a video posted on her social media networks.
