Last Sunday, 20 October 2019, the Dominican Workers’ Party (PTD) approved changing its name to the Power of the People (La Fuerza del Pueblo – LFP). The party leadership reached an agreement with former President Leonel Fernandez in time for the May 2020 presidential election.
The agreement was signed on Friday, 18 October 2019 by the former president of the PTD Antonio Florián and Leonel Fernández. It states that the LFP will have 35 members of the Political Committee, 10 chosen by Florian and 20 by Fernández, with five decided by mutual agreement.
The agreement states that Fernández will be the LFP party president, and Florián, the general secretary. There will be five vice presidents, two chosen by Florian and three by Fernández.
As part of the agreement, Fernández guarantees that the PTD candidates would continue to be proposed while Fernández is given the power to carry out alliances as he wishes for the next electoral period.
