National District senator-hopeful, Faride Raful highlighted that the split between the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) will enable enhanced checks and balances within the National Congress. The deputy for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) said there could be a “slight strengthening of democracy with the formation of a new legislative bloc.”
“Public servants who do not fulfill their obligations would be held accountable to the population by more balanced congress,” she said.
Raful said that the National Budget Bill 2020 will be a test of whether there is or not a new correlation of strengths in Congress. “We cannot approve this bill as it was sent by the Executive Power, because it is a deficitary budget and will create more debt for the country that could lead to a crisis that affects the country’s stability.
Legislators that are loyal to former President Leonel Fernández are expected to form a separate bloc now that they have been resigning from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).
