Vice President Margarita Cedeño says she will not resign her role as Vice President. Cedeño also spoke of the trust President Danilo Medina has placed in her to direct the Social Cabinet of the government. She said her continuing to exercise these two roles is not up for discussion.
On Wednesday, 23 October 2019, Cedeño participated in a cabinet meeting held at the Presidential Palace.
Cedeño in September had announced her support to the presidential aspirations of her husband, former President Leonel Fernández at the end of his campaign. Fernández disputed the presidential nomination for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) primary on 6 October 2019. President Danilo Medina had endorsed former Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo, who defeated Fernández.
The Vice President issued the statement after President Danilo Medina told supporters of Fernández: “In the PLD we are open and generous, but we are not fools. Anyone who thinks he’s going to pull our leg is wrong. If you want to fool us, don’t waste your time, because you won’t win.”
Cedeño says that hers is a particular and unique situation in the history of Dominican politics. She says she is in a period of thought and prayer to define her political future. “I do so guided by the certainty that above any personal interest is the interest of the nation,” she said.
