The renamed National Citizen Will Party (The Partido Nacional Voluntad Ciudadana = PNVC) elected Ramfis Domínguez Trujillo as its presidential candidate for the May 2020 elections, during the 40th Extraordinary Assembly of Delegates with the participation of observers from the Central Electoral Board (JCE). Dominguez Trujillo is the grandson of the late dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.
Likewise, the party’s candidates for senators, deputies and councilors for the next elections in 2020 were elected, according to a press release.
In his acceptance speech, Domínguez Trujillo said the declaring of his candidacy was a historic day for the homeland. He said it ensures that the new political generation of the Dominican Republic to lead the destinies of our country.
“While other groups focus on internal struggles, on allying their interests, and polarizing the political field with public and private agreements that are seriously detrimental to the interests of the people and the good exercise of democracy, we continue to work to build an attainable reality, making effective proposals, seeking solutions, and making pronouncements of empowerment for the people, for Dominican women, and for our youth,” she said.
Domínguez Trujillo, who said he was a standard-bearer of order and discipline, of respect for the Constitution and laws, “nationalist and democrat by the book,” promised to work for the homeland, without using it.
The candidacy of Dominguez Trujillo needs to be approved by the Central Electoral Board (JCE). It has previously been reported that he does not qualify to run for President because he is a US citizen. The Dominican Constitution establishes that for a foreigner to run for President the person needs to have resigned that citizenship 10 years prior to running for President.
The PNVC was previously the Partido Nacional de Veteranos Civiles (National Party of Civilian Veterans).
