More troops sent to the border

Defense Minister Lieutenant General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem says 8,600 members of the Dominican military are on duty on the border with Haiti. The patrols have increased in response to protests in Haiti that are call for the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse.

The Defense Minister said most of the demonstrations are taking place in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. Port-au-Prince is about 55 km from the nearest big Dominican city, Jimaní. He said the border from Montecristi to Pedernales had been reinforced as a prevention measure.

A range of equipment is being used for border patrols, including drones, cameras, and all-terrain vehicle (ATVs). The Navy is using ships to patrol the western coasts of Manzanillo and Pedernales. The Air Force is flying over the border with helicopters and Super Tucano aircraft.
