PLD to object to the candidacy of Leonel Fernandez

Temístocles Montás, the newly appointed acting president of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), says that the ruling party’s Political Committee agreed to formalize an objection to Leonel Fernández running for president on the ticket of other political parties. José Ramón Fadul, the PLD delegate for the JCE, was instructed to proceed with presenting the objection to the Central Electoral Board (JCE).

Speaking on the radio talk show El Sol de la Mañana, on 29 October, Montás said that Fernández had created a monarchy within the PLD, and the members of the Political Committee had been acting as his serfs. He said the resignation of Fernández from the PLD has now created the conditions for the party to start anew.

The debate on whether Fernández can run for another political party could extend to 3 March 2020, the deadline for the registration of presidential candidates. Legal experts have run the gamut of arguments, with those in favor mainly arguing ambiguities in the Political Parties Law 33-18. Those against say that the spirit of the law was precisely to impede candidates switching between political parties. The Central Electoral Board (JCE) now needs to issue its opinion that can later be contested by the higher courts up to the Constitutional Court.
