Politicians loyal to government are still majority in Chamber of Deputies

A report by N Digital says that even with the 27 deputies of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) moving to form the People’s Force (LFP-PTD) party, those backing the Medina administration are still majority in the Chamber o Deputies. Nevertheless, the government will now need to negotiate for the approval of bills that require a qualified majority, such as is the National Budget. The LFP-PTD now gathers the legislators that are loyal to former President Leonel Fernández.

N Digital says that the correlation of legislators in the Chamber of Deputies favors the PLD 98 to 92. Of these, the opposition now includes the 27 LFP deputies, 11 from the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), one from the Christian Democrat Quisqueyan Party (PCQD). The PRSC and the PCQD declared Leonel Fernández their presidential candidate for the 2020 election. Others now in the opposition are 51 legislators representing the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), one from the Frente Amplio and one from the Alianza Pais.

N Digital says that the Chamber of Deputies has not met for a regular session in October.

Loyal to the ruling PLD party are 77 deputies from the PLD, one who abandoned the PRSC and two who left the PRM, plus 14 from the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD); one from the Alternative Democratic Movement (MODA) and one from the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR).

PLD delegate to the Central Electoral Board (JCE), José Ramón Fadul minimized the strength of the opposition. He remarked that of the 35 deputies who had supported Leonel Fernández for President, only 27 left the party and eight have remained in the PLD.
