2019 Santo Domingo ITU Triathlon World Cup

Franklin de la Cruz, president of the Dominican Triathlon Federation, announced Santo Domingo will host the Triathlon World Championship this weekend. The event has the support and endorsement of the International Triathlon Union (ITU). The event offers US$60,000 in cash prizes. The winner gets US$7,500.

The event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 9-10 November at the Sans Soucí beach in Punta Torrecilla (Villa Duarte) of Santo Domingo East. The swim-run-and bike race has categories in sprint and super sprint distances. Athletes have registered from 25 countries.

The competition includes a 1,500-meter swim (2 laps), a 40 km bike race (5 laps) and a 10 m run (3 laps). The swim will take place in a rectangular circuit of 750 meters in two laps in the Marina of the Sans Souci’s Naval Officers Club. The bike race is set to leave the transition zone to the right at West on Av. España until the turning point in front of the National Aquarium. The return is on the opposite way until a turning point in front of the Naval Academy. Then there is a turn and back to Marina of Sans Souci, passing through the same transition.

The competition offers views of the Caribbean while completing a loop of 2.5 km that will be repeated four times on the asphalt course. The race finishes inside the Marina, at the end of the run course.

More than 100 men and women athletes from around 25 countries are expected to arrive in the next few days for the competition. The event will be held on the beach of Sans Soucí, at the Officers Club of the 27 de Febrero Naval Base.

Athletes are coming from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States. The athletes are arriving through Las Americas (Santo Domingo) and Punta Cana international airports.
