Sports media have credited 21-year old Juan Soto with being a key player in the Washington Nationals winning the World Series last Wednesday, 31 October 2019. The Washington Nationals were down by two runs in the eighth inning of the wild card game when Soto hit his two-run single to tie the game. In Game 1, Soto had homered and hit a two-run double. He slugged in home runs in Games 5 and 6, too.
The series went all the way to Game 7, when the Washington Nationals pulled a 6-2 win at the Houston Astros home stadium.
As reported, Soto was 2-for-3 with a walk in Game 7. He walked and scored on Howie Kendrick’s two-run home run in the seventh inning, then he drove home Adam Eaton with an RBI single in the eighth. Soto hit .333/.438/.741 with three home runs, two doubles, seven RBI and six runs scored in the Fall Classic.
The Nationals scored the needed six runs in the last three innings of the game to clinch their first World Series championship in the franchise’s history. Others getting maximum credit for the win are Max Scherzer, Howie Kendrick and Anthony Rendon.
Sports broadcasters remarked on the oddity of the both the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros losing the games when they had the home field advantage club.
Juan Soto set the record as the youngest player ever to homer three times in one World Series. US sports media focused on Soto making the difference.
In 2005, the Expos moved to Washington, D.C. and were renamed the Nationals. The franchise had won the National League division five times, but this is the team’s first pennant.
