
On Sunday night, 3 November 2019, the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that the world record for the most number of people simultaneously dancing merengue is now owned by the Dominican Republic, with 422 couples. The event took places in Plaza España in the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo. The pairs danced to the “El merenguón” song by Joseíto Mateo, “El Rey del Merengue”.
Natalia Ramirez, the Official Adjudicator for Guinness World Records, confirmed the success of the Dominican Republic to surpass Russia, who had held this world record since 2013.
The dance lasted five minutes and 18 seconds, and started with 427 couples but five were disqualified.
During the process a judge was in charge of evaluating every 24 pairs of dancers. At the end of the event, the couples who participated received a commemorative medal.
The event, “Un Record Pa’l Merengue” was organized by Alberto Zayas and had the backing of the Ministry of Culture.
