The Dominican Urology Society is celebrating November as the Awareness Month for Prostate Cancer to create increased awareness concerning the disease. The board of the medical society notes that four men die each day in this country from prostate cancer. The statistics indicate that in the Dominican Republic there are nearly 3,700 cases diagnosed and a reported death of 1,700 each year according to the website www.resumendesalud.net, which specializes in medical sector reporting.
This type of cancer is preventable through proper diet, routine exercises, limited alcohol consumption, no tobacco and yearly checkups. Nevertheless, prostate cancer is the most frequent cancer in the male population.
Dr. Miguel Sanchez Caba, the president of the Society of Urologists, noted that one of the causes for the late diagnosis of this disease is the “macho” attitude on many men, together with the fear and the jokes about the anal examination, which prevents men from submitting to this routine exam. Since prostate cancer does not present symptoms in its early stages, yearly exams are recommended.
