Ivan Gatón: DR threatened by the escalating crisis in Haiti

In an interview with Federico Méndez on RNN Channel 27, international relations expert Iván Ernesto Gatón warned that the Dominican Republic needs to pay closer attention to neighboring Haiti. He observed that Haiti is a very particular case. He indicated that Haiti is practically living off foreign aid. He warned that the Dominican Republic has not been realizing that Haiti is a threat to its future.

As long as Haiti doesn’t have stability, the Dominican Republic has to keep thinking that everything it can achieve in development of all kinds is going to be curtailed by the Haitian problem, he said. Gatón said the population of the impoverished country has nowhere else to go but the Dominican Republic.
