Campaigning begins for municipal elections

On Friday, 8 November, the campaign officially opens for the municipal elections scheduled for 16 February 2020. Some 158 mayors, 235 heads of districts, 1,164 councilors and 735 spokesmen will all be elected. The Dominican Constitution establishes that municipal authorities should be chosen on the third Sunday in February every four years. The elected will be sworn into office on 24 April 2020.

This is the first time that the municipal elections will not be held at the same time as the congressional and presidential elections. Political analysts say the outcome of these elections will influence the results of the congressional and presidential election scheduled for 17 May 2020.
