PRM announces “Great Coalition for Change” at congressional and municipal levels

After eight months of talks with different political organizations, the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) announced during a YouTube presentation that the agreement for a “Great Alliance for Change” is limited to electing legislative and municipal officers. The party is open to other parties, social movement and to the backing of individuals from all around the country.

The president of the party, Puerto Plata senator José Ignacio Paliza made the announcement online. He pointed out that at the head of the coalition is Luis Abinader, the PRM presidential candidate. Abinader’s presidential candidacy also has the backing of the Social Democratic Revolutionary Party (PSD), the Dominican Humanist Party (PHD), Dominicans for Change (DxC), Alliance for Democracy (APD) and Broad Front (Frente Amplio), as well as many other political, social and citizen movements. The candidacy is backed by the Democratic Coalition that is headed by journalist Juan Bolivar Diaz, and other well-known citizens.

“This Great Coalition for Change continues to work to achieve the broadest integration of the political and social forces that coincide with the PRM in a clear line of opposition to the PLD. Thus, at this moment, possibilities are being discussed to reach senatorial and municipal agreements with other party groups. He mentioned talks are ongoing with Juntos Podemos and Alianza País that backs Guillermo Moreno for President.

Juntos Podemos is a coalition of political parties made up by the Institutional Democratic Block (BIS), Quisqueyan Democrat Christian Party (PQDC), National Progressive Force (FNP), National Unity Party (PUN), National Citizen Will Party (PNVD), Dominican Workers Party (PTD-LFP), Institutional Democrat Party (PDI) and Dominican Green Party (Pasove).

The online document stresses that the PRM’s main priority is “the dismantling of the system of absolute control that the Dominican Liberation Party has exercised over the public powers.” The PRM highlights that this is the most pressing and challenging task facing the opposition political and social forces: displacing the PLD from power and building together a better destiny for our nation.

The announcement came after many have criticized that the PRM would ally with former President Leonel Fernández and his followers. Fernández had run for the ruling PLD presidential candidacy, but lost in a primary that independent observers say was tainted by widespread electoral irregularities. He would split from the PLD to join the Dominican Workers Party (PTD) and create the PTD-La Fuerza del Pueblo political alliance. The alliance would name Fernández their presidential candidate. Nevertheless, the present Electoral Regime Law and Political Parties Law have statements that impede a candidate that ran for one party to run for another. The JCE has yet to rule regarding the presidential candidates registered by political parties that did not hold a primary on 6 October 2019.
