Selman says he backs making the Av. Anacaona more pedestrian-friendly

Culture Minister Eduardo Selman says that when he spoke of subtracting 10 lineal meters from the Mirador del Sur Park he meant these should be added to areas for the use of pedestrians, not added to the Av. Anacaona for vehicular traffic. Interviewed on El Gobierno de la Mañana, the architect who was the first to build residential high rises on the Av. Anacaona, said the additional meters would be used for expanding the sidewalks. “The Av. Anacaona is a speedway and it needs to be made more pedestrian-friendly,” he stated.

Selman suggested that more parking with lighting and a bicycle lane be added. He recommended integrating the Avenida Mirador del Sur as a recreational way inside the park. The avenue is located at the north side of the Mirador del Sur Park. It is closed off to vehicular traffic to allow for runners to use it, thus it is also known as the Avenida de la Salud.

Selman’s remarks had followed comments by fellow architect Eugenio Pérez Montás. Both now say they were misinterpreted and back the position of National District Mayor David Collado who rejected that land be taken from the park to be used for vehicular traffic.
