Amidst continued reports of femicides making the rounds of social media and the press, the Attorney General Office releases statistics indicating femicides are down and that government prevention programs are working. According to the Attorney General’s office, so far this year at least 62 women have been murdered, of whom only eight had previously complained to the authorities about their partners.
Since 2005, 1,295 women have been killed by their partners. In the 62 cases this year, 19 of the men killed themselves after the crime, six are on the run, and the rest are waiting for trial.
There were 90 femicides in 2005, 93 in 2006, 86 in 2007, 121 in 2008, 79 in 2009, 86 in 2010, 116 in 2011, 91 in 2012, 64 in 210, 85 in 2014, 73 in 2015, and 76 in 2016.
The women killed were aged between 16 and 57, and the killers were between 24 and 73.
The women were killed by stabbing, shooting, blunt force trauma, poison, burned, strangled and asphyxiated.
The Attorney General’s office says there needs to be a change of attitude, a change of the culture of machoism, and an education process.
Media reports indicate that in the past week, five women have been killed by their spouses. Among these are the cases of Gladys Alvarado, who lived in Villa Blanca Primera, in Sabana Perdida, Santo Domingo north, was stabbed by her husband and died later in hospital.
Her husband, 53-year-old Manual Montero Ogando, tried to commit suicide but was not successful and was taken to hospital.
This was the third femicide over the weekend, as on Friday 8 November, Fatima Guzman was killed by her husband while she was sleeping. She was shot three times by Humberto Martinez, who also tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the mouth, and is currently in hospital in a serious condition.
On Saturday, 9 November, in Los Alcarrizos, 39-year-old Leonidas Mueses died as a result of being stabbed 11 times by her 60-year-old retired fireman husband, Salvador Tapia. He also tried to kill himself, stabbing himself twice, but is also in a hospital recovering.
