Hearing delayed for Margarita Hernández

The hearing of Margarita Hernandez, the suspended director of the Domestic Violence Unit in San Pedro de Macoris, has been postponed again. She is charged with violating articles 265, 267, 126, 127, 147, 148, 177 and 178 of the Penal Code, to the detriment of the late Juana Domínguez Salas and Anibel González Ureña. Both women had been previously attacked by their partners, who were subsequently jailed, but then released after signing deals with the Domestic Violence Unit. On their release, the men returned to finish off what they had started and both women were murdered.

The public prosecutors are asking for one year in preventive custody, but her lawyer, Danny Sanchez, argues that there is a conspiracy against his client. He pointed out that she is not a prosecutor as is often wrongfully stated. He said she is an investigator and as such the coercive measures should not be heard by the assigned court.

Sánchez urged the Attorney General’s Office to take action. He said that the deals with the two men who killed their spouses after leaving prison were legal and endorsed by his defendant’s superiors and judges. Sanchez disputed that only Hernandez Morales is accused in the case.

The suspended director of the Gender Violence Unit of San Pedro de Macorís has stated that the deal for the release of Yasmil Oscar Fernandez was drafted by instructions from suspended prosecutor Pedro Núñez.
