The Dominican Volleyball Federation (Fedovoli) demands the immediate repair of the Palacio Ricardo Gioriber Arias, Santo Domingo’s main volleyball venue. Alexis García, president of Fedovoli, said a brawl during the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) assembly resulted in broken glass doors and other damages. The PRD met to choose the party’s presidential candidate on Sunday, 10 November 2019 at the volleyball venue.
García says that the damaged installations affect the practices of the Dominican senior volleyball team. The team has before it the challenge of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The slot needs to be won during the Olympic qualifier scheduled for 10-12 January 2020 at the damaged pavilion. The DR will be competing against Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico.
García complained that the installation was used without the consent of Fedovoli or the Ministry of Sports. He urged the repairs be made immediately by those responsible.
The PRD is an ally of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). During the event, the party announced it would back the presidential candidacy of Gonzalo Castillo of the PLD. The president of the PRD is Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado.
