The Senate approved a resolution that requests President Danilo Medina order the relocation of several military offices located within the historical San Luis Fort in Santiago de los Caballeros. Senator Julio Cesar Valentín (PLD-Santiago) presented the resolution. The proposal calls for the relocation of the offices to be able to turn the fort into a historical, cultural, architectonic and artistic center. The Santiago Carnival Museum would be located there.
The fort today houses the offices of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), the Transportation and Traffic Safety Agency (Digesett), the Joint Military Command for the Cibao, and is used as a parking lot for vehicles seized or retained by the authorities.
The fort is best known for its being key for the 30 March Battle in 1844, when Dominican forces turned back a Haitian army contingent that tried to re-establish Haitian control of the country. It was also the scene of major battles during the War of Restoration between Dominican nationalists and Spain.
