UN checks out DR-Haiti border situation

High-ranking officials of the United Nations and high-level Dominican military were in Dajabón province, on the border with Haiti to inspect the bi-national market, the Codevi free zone and border security.

The visitors received explanations as to how the market worked. Having toured Dajabon, the commission crossed over to Ouanaminthe (Juana Mendez), and the Codevi Free Zone on the border. Codevi chief executive, Fernando Aníbal Capellán hosted the UN and military and explained how the operation worked. Denisse Cabral participated for the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

The UN officials were accompanied by Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Rubén Dario Paulino Sem; Army chief Estanislao Gonell Estévez, and other high-ranking military. Among the United Nations personnel were Miroslav Jenca, under-secretary general for Europe, Asia and the Americas; William Gardner, the advisor from the Department of Political Affairs; Mauricio Ramírez Villegas, resident advisor of the United Nations for the Dominican Republic.
