
The bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Baní, Monsignor Víctor Masalles, denounced that several trees of the Las Dunas National Park have been cut down, allegedly with the consent of the local authorities. “The disaster in Las Dunas (Matanzas, Calderas and Salinas) is a disgrace,” he stated. He spoke of the indiscriminate cutting down of trees in the protected area. “This happens with the consent of the authorities of Baní,” he said. He asked: “Who will save the dunes from these predatory criminals?
The representative of the Catholic Church requested the intervention of the authorities of the Ministry of Environment and of President Danilo Medina so that this practice not continue.
He also called for an investigation to establish who are the people behind these criminals. The Dunes of Baní, in the province of Peravia, were declared a protected area in 1996 because of their biodiversity in flora and fauna. The Dunes of Baní are the most extensive dune system in the Caribbean.
