
On Sunday 17 November 2019, a second lieutenant from the army, Domingo Miguel Cuevas, died and civilians Alexander Ogando Adames and Manuel Ogando were injured in a shootout when a unit from the Specialized Corps for Frontier Security (Cesfront) confiscated 300 sacks of sandalwood, which it is illegal to cut down.
The incident happened in Las Mercedes, Pedernales at 3 pm, when the Cesfront unit attempted to confiscate the cargo, which was located in a property owned by Adames. Ogando then arrived and shot at the members of the military, who replied by shooting back. Both Ogando and Adames and were injured, and are under arrest in hospital. Miguel Cuevas died on his way to hospital.
