AES Dominicana starts 58MW solar energy project

President Danilo Medina visited Angostura in southcentral Peravia province for the groundbreaking of the first AES Dominicana solar energy project on Tuesday, 19 November 2019. With an investment of approximately U$60 million and a 12-month construction period, the AES Bayasol solar energy park is planned to generate 10 hours a day of power (100 GWh a year), making this available to the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI).

Around 145,000 solar panels with a capacity of 405 watts peak per panel are being installed at the solar park. Spanish company TSK Electricidad y Electrónica, S. A. is the builder of the power installation.

The president of AES Dominicana, Edwin de los Santos, stated in his speech that AES Bayasol was conceived and financed entirely with private energy supply contracts. In delivering the keynote address, Juan Ignacio Rubiolo, president for AES Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, indicated that the goal is to continue working to strengthen and diversify the region’s energy matrix.

The Bayasol solar generation park marks the entry of AES Dominicana into renewable energy market in the country. The corporation is the country’s largest investor in the energy sector, having invested more than US$1.6 billion in the sector. AES Dominicana operates natural gas-fired AES Andrés, Los Mina (DPP), two gas pipelines and the generator Itabo, in co-ownership with the government’s FONPER state fund.
