
The civic watchdog movement Citizen Participation called for all citizens to back the “March of the Butterflies” in homage to the Mirabal Sisters and the historic struggle for rights, equality and freedom. The march will take place next Sunday, 24 November 2019, starting at 9am from the Mirador del Sur Avenue and walking down Enrique Jiménez Moya Avenue.
The Dominican Republic is the Latin American country with the highest index of femicides, according to statistics of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Between January 2010 and September 2019, some 1,795 women have been murdered in the Dominican Republic.
The Attorney General’s Office has recorded 106 cases of women murdered between January and September of 2019, of which 59 have been classified as an “intimate femicide”, that is to say their spouses murdered the women.
Likewise, Citizen Participation called for all citizens to seek that presidential, legislative and municipal candidates commit to comply with fundamental rights of women, including the drafting and implementation of effective laws and public policies to improve the living conditions of all Dominican women.
