Florida-Dominican Republic higher education summit

The Embassy of the United States and the Dominican-American Cultural Institute (ICDA) inaugurated the Florida-Dominican Republic Higher Education Summit in Santo Domingo on 19 November 2019. The summit seeks to promote connections and strategic alliances between educational institutions in both countries.

More than 150 people are participating in the summit, including representatives from 11 Floridian universities and 20 Dominican higher education institutions.

During her opening remarks, US Ambassador Robin Bernstein highlighted the cultural and geographic ties that bind the Dominican Republic and the state of Florida and the collaboration between Floridian and Dominican educational and governmental institutions. She also highlighted shared achievements in areas such as health, safety and entrepreneurship.

For her part, Darys Estrella, president of the ICDA board of directors, said that the main objective of this summit is to establish opportunities to improve the quality of their teachers, explore mutually beneficial societies, and establish the basis for student and teacher mobility agreements.

In addition to the presentations, participants visited universities in Santo Domingo and Santiago. The representatives of US higher learning institutions will observe the facilities and discuss opportunities for cooperation with their counterparts.

Participants came from Florida International University (FIU), Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, University of Florida and Miami Dade College, among others. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT), the Ministry of Education (MINERD) and the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) participated in the event.
