Starting at 9am from the Mirador del Sur Park at the intersection with Jiménez de Moya Avenue (the extension of Av. Winston Churchill), a protest walk down to the Centro de los Héroes is scheduled. The walk is to protest the grim reality of rising deaths of Dominican women victims of gender violence.
The protest walk is taking place to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women that is celebrated by the United Nations on 25 November 2019. The United Nations declared day honors the three Dominican Mirabal sisters that were murdered during the Trujillo regime.
The march is named “March of the Butterflies Against Violence” (Marcha de las Mariposas Contra la Violencia) and the theme is “Not One More” (Ni una mas). Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) stats indicate that from January 2010 to September 2019, 1,795 women have been murdered in the Dominican Republic. The DR is the Latin American country with the highest femicide rate.
