Will Rafael Paz and Faride Raful debate?

Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate for senator Rafael Paz has accepted to participate in a public debate with his principal contender, Deputy Faride Raful of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Paz and Raful are the leading contenders for the senate seat representing the National District. Reinaldo Pared Perez, of the PLD, currently holds the position.

In tweets, Paz invited Raful to discuss corruption and other topics during the debate that is organized by the National Young Entrepreneurs Association (ANJE). He criticized that Raful uses the corruption issue to taint her political contenders. He said that in international politics, this has proven to be a boomerang that does not contribute to a more transparent state or stronger institutions as sought by Dominican citizens.

He asked which bills Raful can show for her three years in Congress. “Has she lobbied for a bill for government revenue controls?” he asked. Or has she sent a bill for amendments to the government procurement law? Or actions to modify a better Chamber of Accounts, or initiatives to increase the budget of the Chamber of Accounts?” he asked.

“Citizens elect legislators to drive real transformations, not to ride the crest of every media wave to gain popularity,” he added.

Faride Raful is a lawyer, politician and TV and radio presenter. She is the daughter of politician Tony Raful.

Rafael Paz is a lawyer who was the executive vice president of the National Business Council (Conep) before being named head of the National Competitiveness Council (CNC)
